Polymer Vision may hit the screens again

LONDON — On-line reports in the Netherlands suggest that Polymer Vision has been bought from the administrators by an Asian based company, and that it will continue to work on launching foldable e-paper display devices.

According to the reports, the Eindhoven, Netherlands-headquartered company could retain as many as 80 percent of the workforce of 50 at its Southampton, England site.

The reports also suggest any new company would shift the focus away from mobile phones and concentrate more on e-book readers.

The display maker went into liquidation in July with the loss of 50 jobs, and when EE Times Europe contacted the administrators , Smith and Williamson , they would not comment whether any potential buyer has emerged for the company's facilities, or the technology behind its displays.

"We cannot comment at this stage about the future of the company since there are several legal issues to be resolved," a spokeswoman said at the time.

Polymer Vision was a spin-out from Philips, which demonstrated its first Readius roll-out 5-inch monochrome flexible screen in 2005 and subsequently a full colour prototype last year.

Polymer Vision's electronic reader was ready to go into production in the second half of 2008, but the company had stuggled to put the finances in place due to economic pressures along with a market dominated mostly by the Amazon Kindles and the Sony Readers.

Analysts suggested that the screen may have been too small and the device was more like an iPhone without the advantages of a color screen and backlight.
