Apologies to weekend readers, as the facts in previous coverage were partly incorrect: NBC's Monday night 3-D programming is not a movie, but rather, a specially created episode of the "Chuck" TV series that airs at 8pm in the U.S.
Just before the halftime show during Sunday's Super Bowl, the network aired a series of three commercials in the new/old 3-D format (see 3-D at Super Bowl). The first was for the DreamWorks film "Monsters vs. Aliens" which is coming out in 3-D this spring. The second was for SoBe energy drinks. The third was a promo for NBC's special 3-D episode of "Chuck."
Intel sponsored the 3-D glasses themselves, and there was a neat little introduction before the commercials telling viewers to put on the glasses. My family had no problem picking up the glasses, free, at a local K-Mart, though we had to ask where they were to find them.
The 3-D effect was actually surprisingly good -- better, by my reckoning, than the traditional blue-red glasses provided in some DVD titles such as my daughter's "The Magic of Pegasus." Still, you wouldn't want to watch an entire feature film this way. It's not nearly as good as polarized glasses. It will be interesting to see how NBC uses the effect with a TV program -- my guess is that, as in "Pegasus," viewers will be instructed to put the glasses on and take them off for select scenes. Stay tuned.
